Acer purchases Gateway Computers, becomes number three PC vendor in the world.
Acer to acquire Gateway Computers
Gateway Computers, the fourth largest PC manufacturer in the US, and Acer Inc., a leading world-wide PC vendor, have reached an agreement for Acer to purchase Gateway, moving Acer to the third largest PC manufacturer in the world.
HP is the number one PC manufacturer in the world, and Dell is the number two PC manufacturer.
This acquisition puts Acer in the position to purchase Packard Bell next because Gateway has the first right of refusal to purchase Packard Bell, a leading European PC manufacturer based in France.
Packard Bell was previously being targeted by Lenovo for acquisition because of their strong European presence, but Acer may have done an end-run around them with their purchase of Gateway.
Obviously, number three in the world means Acer is a major PC manufacturer and it looks like they're not stopping there.
Both companies currently have links to buyout press releases on their websites.
